What Will I See from the Chopper?
As your adventure begins, you'll enjoy stunning aerial views of Reykjavik's colorful rooftops, the aquamarine ocean, lush landscapes, rugged terrain, and charming little islands. Midway to Þórisjökull, keep an eye out for Þingvellir National Park and Þingvallavatn Lake, both part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. The expansive plains and the visible fissures separating tectonic plates offer a soothing yet awe-inspiring experience.
Þórisjökull (pronounced θouːrɪs jœːkʏtl) translates to “Þóris’s glacier” or “the glacier of Þórr” in Old Norse. Standing tall at 1,350 meters (4,429 feet), this stunning glacier is located near the town of Borgarnes and is part of the larger Langjökull, Iceland's biggest glacier. Just 73 kilometers (45 miles) from Reykjavik, Þórisjökull is not just breathtaking; it's also a rare subglacial volcano known as a tuya.
Located about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Reykjavik, the Hengill volcano is a geothermal wonder in southwest Iceland. This active area is renowned for its geysers, mud pools, and hot springs, making it a favorite among tourists. The Hengill volcanic system is complex, featuring one main volcano and several smaller ones, all shaped by the tectonic movement of the European and American plates. While it hasn't erupted in 2,000 years, the area is still alive with geothermal activity, attracting visitors to its warm bathing pools and nearby geothermal power plants where you can learn about Iceland's renewable energy initiatives.
